No Surprises Act Disclosure

Your Rights and Protections Against Surprise Air Ambulance Medical Bills

When you receive medical care or medical transport services, you may owe certain out-of-pocket costs, such as a copayment, coinsurance, or deductible. In some cases, federal law protects patients from certain surprise medical bills or balance billing.

The No Surprises Act provides certain protections for patients covered by group health plans or individual health insurance coverage when they receive covered out-of-network air ambulance services.

What Is Balance Billing?

Balance billing, sometimes called surprise billing, may happen when an out-of-network provider bills you for the difference between what your health plan pays and the full amount charged for a service.

For covered air ambulance services, when the No Surprises Act applies, you generally cannot be billed more than your plan’s in-network cost-sharing amount, such as your applicable deductible, copayment, or coinsurance.

Air Ambulance Services

If you are transported by an out-of-network air ambulance provider and the No Surprises Act applies, your health plan may be required to treat the service according to applicable federal surprise billing protections.

This means you may be responsible only for your in-network cost-sharing amount for covered services, and you should not be balance billed for amounts beyond what federal law allows.

You Cannot Be Asked to Waive Certain Air Ambulance Protections

For air ambulance services protected under the No Surprises Act, air ambulance providers generally may not ask you to give up your federal balance billing protections through a notice-and-consent waiver.

Insurance Coverage and Patient Responsibility

The No Surprises Act does not guarantee that every service will be covered by your insurance plan. Coverage may depend on your health plan, benefits, medical necessity, claim review, and other plan requirements.

You may still be responsible for applicable in-network cost-sharing amounts, including deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance.

If your insurance company denies coverage for a service, patient responsibility may depend on the terms of your insurance plan and applicable law.

Good Faith Estimates for Uninsured or Self-Pay Patients

If you are uninsured or choose not to use insurance, you may have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining the expected cost of scheduled non-emergency services.

A Good Faith Estimate is not a contract and does not require you to receive services from Atlas Air Ambulance.

If your final bill is substantially higher than your Good Faith Estimate, you may have the right to dispute the bill through the patient-provider dispute resolution process.

Questions About Your Bill

If you have questions about your bill, insurance claim, or patient responsibility, please contact Atlas Air Ambulance directly.
